Sydney Local SEO: Ranking in the Map Pack Suburb by Suburb

Sydney is a city of suburbs, and local search reflects that. Someone searching “dentist” in Chatswood sees a different map pack from someone searching the same word in Penrith. For businesses that serve a wide area, the challenge is showing up across many suburbs rather than just the one where your office happens to be.

How the map pack decides who to show

Google describes three main factors for local rankings:

  • Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance: how close your business is to the searcher or the location named in the search.
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, links, mentions and overall web presence.

You can’t change where your business is located, so distance will always limit how far your map visibility stretches. But strong relevance and prominence widen that radius considerably, and your website can rank in the organic results below the map in suburbs well beyond it.

Get your Business Profile right

  • Primary category: choose the most specific option that describes your main service. This is one of the strongest relevance signals you control.
  • Secondary categories and services: add every genuine service so you’re eligible for related searches.
  • Service areas: if you visit customers, list the areas you actually cover.
  • Photos and posts: regular, genuine activity shows the profile is maintained.
  • Accurate details: name, address, phone and hours must match your website and directory listings exactly.

Avoid stuffing keywords or suburb names into your business name. It breaches Google’s guidelines and can get a profile suspended.

Reviews that mention the work and the place

Review count and rating matter, but so does the content of reviews. When customers naturally mention the service they received and their suburb, it reinforces relevance. You can’t script reviews, but asking customers to “share a few words about the job” tends to produce more detailed responses than a bare star rating.

Build suburb and region pages that earn their place

To rank organically across Sydney, many businesses create location pages. They work when they contain genuinely local value: jobs completed in that area, local photos, relevant regulations or council information, travel times, and testimonials from customers there. They fail when they’re the same page with the suburb name swapped. We cover how to do this well in our article on creating value across multiple city and area service pages.

Prioritise. Start with the regions where you have the most customers and the best margins (the Inner West, the Hills, the Northern Beaches or Western Sydney, for example) and expand as each page proves itself.

Local links and citations

Links from Sydney-based organisations carry strong local signals: council and community directories, local news sites, business chambers, schools and sporting clubs you support, and suppliers or partners who mention you. Consistent citations on reputable Australian directories also help Google trust your details.

Track rankings by location

A single ranking check from your office tells you very little. Use a grid-based local rank tracker to see where you appear across your service area, then focus effort on the suburbs where you’re close to breaking into the top three. Combine that with call and enquiry tracking so you know which areas actually generate work.
