Search no longer ends with ten blue links. A growing share of questions are answered directly by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s own AI Overviews, and those answers cite a small handful of sources. If your brand is one of them, you earn visibility and trust before anyone clicks. If it isn’t, a competitor gets the mention instead.
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of making your content the source those systems choose. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it, but it rewards some things more heavily and punishes others faster.
How answer engines choose what to cite
Most AI search products work in two steps. First they retrieve a set of pages that look relevant to the question, usually from a conventional search index. Then a language model reads those pages and writes an answer, citing the ones it drew from. That has three practical consequences:
- You still have to rank. If a page never makes the retrieval shortlist, it can’t be cited. Strong organic visibility is the entry ticket.
- Extractable beats impressive. The model favours passages that answer the question cleanly in a few sentences. A brilliant insight buried in paragraph nine is harder to lift than a clear definition near the top.
- Corroboration matters. Claims that appear consistently across several trusted sources are safer for a model to repeat. Brands that are mentioned around the web, not just on their own site, get cited more often.
Structure pages so answers are easy to extract
Write the way a good reference book is laid out. Each section should open with a direct answer, then expand.
- Lead with the answer. Put a one or two sentence response immediately under each question-style heading, then add detail, examples and caveats.
- Use descriptive headings. “How much does pipe relining cost?” is far more useful to a retrieval system than “Pricing”.
- Prefer lists and tables for comparisons. Steps, criteria, pros and cons and specifications are all easier to quote accurately when they’re structured.
- Define your terms. If you use jargon, define it once in plain English. Definitions are among the most commonly cited passages.
- Keep one topic per page. Pages that try to answer everything tend to be cited for nothing.
Give the model reasons to trust you
Answer engines inherit search engines’ caution about who to believe, particularly for health, finance and legal topics. Make the trust signals explicit:
- Name real authors with relevant experience and link to their bios.
- Show first-hand evidence: original data, photos from real jobs, worked examples and case studies.
- Cite primary sources (legislation, standards bodies, official documentation) rather than other blogs.
- Keep facts current. Outdated prices, rules or product details are a fast way to be dropped from answers.
Use structured data and clean technical foundations
Schema markup won’t force a citation, but it removes ambiguity about what a page is and who published it. Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, FAQPage and HowTo markup are all worth implementing where they genuinely describe the content. Beyond schema, make sure pages render without heavy client-side JavaScript, load quickly and aren’t blocked from the crawlers you want to be seen by. Check your robots.txt deliberately: some AI crawlers can be allowed or blocked individually, and that should be a business decision rather than an accident.
Build mentions beyond your own site
Because models look for corroboration, off-site visibility carries real weight. Coverage in industry publications, expert commentary, listings in reputable directories, reviews and relevant guest posts all increase the odds that your brand appears in the material an answer engine draws on. Consistency matters too: your business name, services and key facts should match everywhere they appear.
Measure what you can
AEO reporting is still immature, so combine several signals:
- Run a fixed set of priority questions through the main AI tools each month and record whether you’re cited, mentioned or absent.
- Watch referral traffic from AI products in your analytics.
- Track branded search volume, which tends to rise when you’re recommended in answers.
- Monitor Search Console for queries where impressions hold steady but clicks fall, a common sign that an AI Overview is answering on your behalf.
Where to start
Pick the ten questions your best customers ask before they buy. Check who gets cited for each one today, then rebuild your answers to be clearer, better evidenced and easier to quote than theirs. That single exercise usually exposes the gaps that matter most.
